Look Back to Move Forward
To truly understand where we need to be, we need to see where we came from. Today's post is a discussion of some of the influences that have shaped the current educational landscape in California and he United States. To facilitate this I have created these presentations.
Creating this particular presentation really forced me to confront the political and socioeconomic
challenges that many of my students face every day. These students come from a very different
background than me and that is something I have to keep in mind when I
teach. Their needs are much different
than mine, and in the end, it is my job to make sure that their academic needs are
met. In many ways this is a reflection on TPE 1:
Engaging and Support All Students in Learning
Apply knowledge of students, including their prior experiences, interests, and social-emotional learning needs, as well as their funds of knowledge and cultural, language, and socioeconomic backgrounds, to engage them in learning
The
most important lesson I learned through working on these presentations was the fact that our students come from diverse backgrounds and require different teaching methods
than I did growing up. There are
multiple political and socioeconomic factors that affect them that they don’t consciously understand. As an educator, it is my
role to understand this impact and shape my lesson around the needs of my
students.
